Choosing the right fan size
| Room area | Suggested blade span |
|---|---|
| Up to 75 sq. ft. | 36 in. or smaller |
| 75–144 sq. ft. | 36–42 in. |
| 144–225 sq. ft. | 44 in. |
| 225–400 sq. ft. | 50–54 in. |
| Over 400 sq. ft. | 56 in. and larger, or two fans |
Mount the blades 8–9 ft above the floor where possible (never lower than 7 ft) and at least 10 in. below the ceiling. Hugger models suit ceilings under 8 ft; use a longer downrod on high or vaulted ceilings.
Fan types
- Standard
- Hangs from a downrod; the most common style and usually the best airflow.
- Hugger
- Low-profile fan mounted flush to the ceiling for rooms with low ceilings.
- HSSD
- High-speed small-diameter fans, a DOE category for fans with higher blade-tip speeds; their efficiency is rated at high speed only.
- Outdoor
- Damp-rated fans suit covered porches; wet-rated fans can be exposed to rain.
Understanding fan efficiency
ENERGY STAR ceiling fans are rated in cubic feet per minute of airflow per watt (CFM/W). Many high-efficiency fans use DC motors, which draw only a few watts on low speed. Because a fan cools people rather than the room, the biggest savings come from raising the air-conditioning thermostat by about 4 °F while the fan runs, and turning the fan off in empty rooms.
Ceiling Fan FAQ
Which way should a ceiling fan turn in summer?
Counterclockwise as seen from below, so it pushes air down and creates a cooling breeze. In winter, run it clockwise on low to circulate warm air from the ceiling.
Can I install a ceiling fan where a light fixture was?
Only if the electrical box is marked as acceptable for fan support and firmly attached to the structure. Standard light-fixture boxes must be replaced with a fan-rated box or brace.
Does a ceiling fan lower the room temperature?
No. It makes people feel cooler by moving air across the skin. Turn it off when the room is empty to save energy.
