Analog, cordless and VoIP phones
- Cordless phone
- A base connected to an analog phone line and AC power, with one or more battery-powered handsets.
- Expansion handset
- An extra handset and charger that registers to a compatible cordless base.
- Corded phone
- A traditional handset on a cord; some corded bases also support cordless handsets.
- VoIP desk phone
- Connects to a computer network and phone system instead of an analog line; often powered over Ethernet (PoE).
- Conference phone
- A speakerphone with microphones designed to pick up voices around a table.
Why standby power matters for phones
Phones are plugged in all the time, so their energy use is dominated by standby power. Each watt of continuous draw adds about 8.8 kWh per year. Certified models keep standby consumption low, and VoIP phones with Energy Efficient Ethernet save additional power at the network port.
Power over Ethernet classes
| PoE class | Max power at the phone | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | 3.84 W | Basic phones with small displays |
| Class 2 | 6.49 W | Mid-range phones with backlit displays |
| Class 3 | 12.95 W | Color-screen phones, expansion modules |
| Class 4 | 25.5 W | Video phones and large touchscreens (802.3at) |
Telephone FAQ
Do cordless phones work when the power goes out?
Usually not — the base needs AC power. Some models include battery backup for the base; otherwise keep a mobile phone or a line-powered corded phone for emergencies.
Can I use non-rechargeable batteries in a cordless handset?
No. Use only the rechargeable battery type the manufacturer specifies. Alkaline batteries can leak or rupture when the charger tries to charge them.
What should I check if my VoIP phone has choppy audio?
Use a wired connection where possible, make sure voice traffic is prioritized (QoS) on the network, and ask your administrator to check firewall settings for SIP and RTP traffic.
