About the GE ADSE50X
GE model ADSE50X is a 49.6-pint portable dehumidifier that meets ENERGY STAR efficiency requirements. Under the current DOE test procedure it removes 49.64 pints (23.5 liters) of water per day, measured at 65 °F and 60% relative humidity.
That capacity puts it in the middle DOE size class for portable dehumidifiers (25.01–50 pints/day), a good match for a living area, large bedroom or a typical basement.
The sealed refrigeration system holds 8.3 oz of R-32 refrigerant.
Its integrated energy factor (IEF) is 2.01 liters per kWh — about 4.25 pints of water removed for every kilowatt-hour. That is better than 46% of the 533 Portable models in our database.

Safety information
- Plug the dehumidifier directly into a grounded 115–120 V receptacle. Do not use an extension cord or adapter plug, and do not remove the grounding prong.
- Keep the unit upright. If it has been tipped on its side, stand it upright for the time the manual specifies before plugging it in so compressor oil can settle.
- Unplug the unit before cleaning it, removing the filter or moving it to another room.
- Empty the bucket carefully and never move the unit with a full bucket — spilled water near an outlet is a shock hazard.
- Do not operate the unit where flammable vapors (gasoline, paint thinner, solvents) may be present, and keep curtains and other objects away from the air inlet and outlet.
- Keep children from playing with the unit or the water bucket.
Installation and first-time setup
- Unpack and inspect
Remove all packing tape and foam, check the bucket and float are seated correctly, and make sure the filter is in place.
- Pick a spot
Place the unit on a firm, level floor near the center of the damp area, with roughly a foot of clear space around the air inlet and outlet (check your manual for exact clearances). Keep it away from heat sources and out of direct rain or standing water.
- Close the space
Shut windows and exterior doors in the area being dehumidified. A dehumidifier cannot keep up with outdoor air pouring in.
- Choose a drain method
Use the bucket for occasional use, or for unattended operation connect a garden-type hose to the continuous-drain outlet (if your model has one) and run it downhill to a floor drain. Without a built-in pump, the drain must be lower than the outlet on the unit.
- Set the humidity and start
Plug in, select a target of about 45–50% relative humidity and let the unit run. In a very damp basement, expect it to run almost continuously for the first few days.
Using your dehumidifier
Choosing a humidity setting
Keep indoor relative humidity between about 30% and 50%. Levels above 60% encourage mold, dust mites and musty odors, while very low humidity causes dry skin and static. A setting of 45–50% is a good starting point; check it with an inexpensive hygrometer, because built-in sensors read the air right at the unit.
How temperature affects performance
Compressor dehumidifiers remove the most water in warm, humid air and progressively less as the room cools. The 49.64 pints/day rating is measured under DOE test conditions of 65 °F and 60% relative humidity; in a cooler basement, daily water removal will be lower. Below roughly 65 °F the coil can begin to frost, and many units pause the compressor periodically to defrost. Check your manual for the minimum operating temperature.
Bucket and continuous drainage
When the bucket is full, a float switch shuts off the compressor and usually turns on an indicator light. Empty and rinse the bucket, then reseat it fully — the unit will not restart if it is misaligned. At full output this unit can collect up to 49.64 pints a day, so continuous drainage is the better choice for unattended operation.
Getting the best results
- Fix the source of moisture where you can: run bathroom fans, vent the clothes dryer outdoors, and slope soil and downspouts away from the foundation.
- Keep interior doors to the dehumidified area closed unless you intend to treat the adjoining space.
- Use the higher fan speed for faster drying after a leak or flood, and the lower speed for quieter maintenance operation.
- Do not set the target lower than you need; every extra point of dryness costs electricity.
Care and maintenance
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Each time you empty the bucket | Rinse it with clean water and check that the float moves freely. If you use a drain hose, confirm it is still flowing. |
| Every 2 weeks | Remove the air filter, vacuum or wash it in warm water and let it dry fully before reinstalling. |
| Every month | Wash the bucket with mild dish soap to prevent mold and slime; dry before reinstalling. |
| Every year | Unplug the unit and gently vacuum dust from the coils and grilles with a soft brush. |
| Before storage | Empty and dry the bucket, clean the filter, let the unit run in fan mode (if available) to dry the interior, and store it upright under a cover. |
Troubleshooting
Most dehumidifier complaints come down to room conditions, a dirty filter or drainage. Work through these checks before calling for service. If the display shows an error code, consult the code table in your manufacturer's manual.
| Problem | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Not collecting much water | Room already at or below the setpoint; room too cool; dirty filter. | Lower the setpoint temporarily to test; check room temperature against the manual's operating range; clean the filter. |
| Compressor will not start | Bucket full or not seated; unit just switched off; power interruption. | Empty and reseat the bucket; wait about 3 minutes for the compressor restart delay; check the outlet with another appliance. |
| Frost on the coils | Room temperature too low; restricted airflow from a dirty filter. | Turn the unit off until the frost melts, clean the filter, and raise the room temperature if possible. |
| Runs constantly | Very damp space; open windows or doors; area larger than the unit can handle. | Close the space, look for water intrusion, and allow several days for a damp basement to dry out. |
| Water on the floor | Bucket not seated; drain hose loose or running uphill; cracked bucket. | Reseat the bucket, secure the hose and confirm it slopes downward to the drain. |
| Air from the unit feels warm | Normal operation — dehumidifiers release the heat removed from the air plus the heat of the compressor. | No action needed. Expect the room temperature to rise a few degrees. |
| Musty smell | Mold or slime in the bucket or on a dirty filter. | Clean the bucket and filter; run the unit until humidity drops below 50%. |
| Humidity reading looks wrong | Sensor reads air right at the unit; control placed near a moisture source. | Check with a separate hygrometer in the middle of the room and adjust the setpoint to match. |
Energy use and running costs
The GE ADSE50X is rated at 519 kWh per year under ENERGY STAR's standard usage assumption. At an average electricity price of $0.17 per kWh, that is about $88.23 per year.
Its IEF of 2.01 L/kWh means each kilowatt-hour removes about 4.25 pints of water, so drying costs roughly $0.04 per pint at $0.17/kWh. Running flat out at its rated 49.64 pints/day would use about 11.7 kWh ($1.99) per day, an average draw of roughly 487 W.
Actual use depends heavily on how damp the space is, the humidity setting, room temperature and how many months a year the unit runs. A dehumidifier that cycles off once the target is reached uses far less than one running continuously.
