Safety information
- Plug the scanner directly into a grounded wall outlet. Avoid light-duty extension cords, and replace a damaged power cord before use.
- Keep the ventilation openings clear and leave the clearance around the unit that the manual specifies for paper trays, covers and service access.
- Switch off and unplug the unit before cleaning it or reaching deep inside to clear a jam.
- Do not place heavy objects on the scanner glass, and keep long hair, loose clothing and fingers away from the document feeder rollers while scanning.
Setup
- Unpack and remove shipping materials
Remove all tape, foam and protective film, including pieces inside the covers and paper trays. If the scanner has a carriage lock, release it before connecting power.
- Choose a location
Place the unit on a sturdy, level surface (or its floor stand) away from direct sunlight, heating vents and humid areas. Leave room to open covers and pull out trays.
- Connect to your computer or network
Connect the unit to your network (Ethernet or Wi-Fi where available) or directly by USB, following the setup guide. Network connection lets several users share it and makes firmware updates easier.
- Install drivers and software
Install the manufacturer's scanning software and TWAIN/WIA or ICA driver from the support site, or use the operating system's built-in scanning if the model supports it.
- Check the sleep timer
The unit is shipped to enter sleep 15 minutes after the last job. Keep this setting (or shorten it) to minimize idle energy use.
Using your scanner
Scanning tips
- Scan text documents at 300 dpi for readable, searchable PDFs; use 600 dpi or higher only for photos and fine detail.
- Enable duplex scanning to capture both sides in one pass, and turn on blank-page removal to skip empty backs.
- Remove staples and paper clips and flatten folded pages before loading the feeder.
- Use the scanner's carrier sheet for photos, receipts and fragile originals.
Sleep and power settings
The factory sleep delay is 15 minutes. In sleep the unit draws 0.57 W, and 0.07 W when switched off at the power button. Use the auto-off or weekly timer (if offered) to switch the unit off overnight and on weekends.
Care and maintenance
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Monthly, or when copies show marks | Clean the scanner glass and (if equipped) the narrow ADF scanning strip with a soft cloth and a little glass cleaner applied to the cloth, not the glass. |
| At the scan count in the manual | Clean or replace the feed rollers and separation pad to prevent multifeeds and jams. |
| Every 6 months | Install firmware updates from the manufacturer and vacuum dust from the exterior vents. |
Troubleshooting
Most scanner problems come from media, consumables, connections or settings. Try these steps first; for numbered error codes, look up the code in the manufacturer's manual or support site.
| Problem | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical lines on scans or copies | Dust or correction fluid on the scanning glass or ADF scanning strip. | Clean the glass, the narrow scanning strip and the white backing under the document feeder. |
| Multiple pages feed at once | Worn separation pad or rollers; pages stuck together. | Fan the stack before loading, clean the rollers, and replace the roller kit if multifeeds continue. |
| Scanner not detected | USB cable or port issue; driver not installed; scanner asleep. | Try another USB port or cable, reinstall the scanning driver, and wake the scanner by pressing a button. |
| Pages jam in the document feeder | Folded, stapled, damp or very thin originals; overfilled feeder; dirty rollers. | Open the feeder cover and remove the page gently, load fewer sheets, and use a carrier sheet or the flatbed (if equipped) for delicate originals. |
| Slow to start the first job | Unit waking from sleep. | This is normal. Group jobs together; avoid disabling sleep, which raises energy use considerably. |
Energy use and running costs
ENERGY STAR rates this scanner on its low-power modes: 0.57 W in sleep and 0.07 W when switched off. If it stays plugged in and asleep around the clock, sleep mode alone uses about 4.99 kWh per year — roughly $0.85 at $0.17 per kWh.
Switching it off outside a 10-hour, 5-day work week (and letting it sleep during working hours) cuts that to about 1.91 kWh per year ($0.33).
Energy used while actively scanning is not included in these figures; it depends on how many pages you produce.
