About the Samsung QN65S90FAF

The Samsung QN65S90FAF is a 65-inch class 4K OLED TV certified under the ENERGY STAR program for televisions. Its viewable diagonal is 64.5 in. (1,779 sq. in. of picture), with a native resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels.

Each pixel on an OLED panel produces its own light, so black areas switch off completely and power draw rises and falls with how bright the picture is. Connectivity listed in the certification record includes HDMI inputs, USB, wired Ethernet (100 Mbit/s), Bluetooth, and an RS-232 control port.

Under the DOE test procedure the set draws 132 W while playing standard test content and is rated at 246 kWh per year, 20% below the ENERGY STAR on-mode limit of 165 W for a screen this size. Its annual energy use is lower than 39% of the 83 OLED models in our database.

Safety information

  • Place the TV on a stand or furniture rated for its weight and size, or wall-mount it. A free-standing TV can tip forward if a child pulls on it — use the anti-tip strap or bracket supplied with the stand, or a commercial anti-tip kit anchored to the wall.
  • Use only a VESA-compatible wall mount rated for at least the TV's weight, and fasten it into wall studs or masonry with the hardware the mount maker specifies. Drywall anchors alone are not adequate.
  • Use two people to lift and mount a screen of this size. Never press on the panel or lay it face-down on a hard surface.
  • Keep the ventilation openings clear: leave at least 4 in. (10 cm) of space around the back and top, and do not install the TV in a closed cabinet without airflow.
  • Do not expose the TV to rain, moisture, dripping or splashing water, and do not place liquid-filled objects on or above it.
  • Unplug the TV during lightning storms or when it will be unused for a long period, and replace a damaged power cord before further use.

Setup

With a 64.5 in. viewable diagonal and 4K UHD resolution, a comfortable seating distance is roughly 5.5–8 ft (1.6–2.5 m). At 4K resolution you can sit closer without seeing the pixel structure, which makes the picture feel larger. Mount or position the screen so its center is close to eye level from your main seat.

  1. Unpack and inspect

Open the carton on a soft, clear floor area with a helper. Remove the accessories box, remote and power cord before lifting the TV out, and check the panel and frame for shipping damage.

  2. Attach the stand or wall mount

Attach the stand feet or pedestal with the supplied screws, or fit the wall-mount bracket to the VESA holes on the back. Check the VESA pattern and screw size in the manufacturer's manual before buying a mount.

  3. Choose a location

Avoid direct sunlight on the screen and keep the TV away from heating vents and fireplaces. For lowest glare, place it at a right angle to windows rather than opposite them.

  4. Connect your sources

Connect streaming boxes, game consoles and cable/satellite receivers to the HDMI inputs using certified high-speed cables (look for "Premium High Speed" or "Ultra High Speed" labeling for 4K sources). If an HDMI input is labeled ARC or eARC, reserve it for a soundbar or A/V receiver. Connect an Ethernet cable to the LAN port for the most reliable streaming; the port is rated 100 Mbit/s. For over-the-air channels, connect an antenna to the RF/antenna input and run the channel scan in the setup menu.

  5. Power on and run first-time setup

Plug the TV into a wall outlet or a surge protector and follow the on-screen setup. When asked, choose Home (not Store, Retail or Demo) mode — store mode runs the picture at or near maximum brightness and adds substantially to power use.

  6. Update the software

Connect to your network and install any available firmware update before you fine-tune picture settings; updates often fix HDMI compatibility and app issues.

  7. Pair Bluetooth devices

Pair Bluetooth headphones, speakers or a keyboard from the sound or connection menu. Expect some audio delay with wireless headphones; use the TV's audio-sync setting if lips and voice do not match.

Using your TV

Picture settings

Start from the default picture mode (often called Standard, Eco or Auto) — this is the mode in which the Samsung QN65S90FAF was tested for ENERGY STAR. "Vivid" and "Dynamic" modes look bright in a showroom but raise power draw and crush detail. For movies in a dim room, Cinema, Filmmaker or Calibrated modes give the most accurate color.

  • Use the OLED Light / Brightness control to set overall light output; lower settings save energy and reduce wear on the panel.
  • Turn off motion smoothing (frame interpolation) for films if you notice the "soap-opera effect"; leave it on for sports if you prefer.
  • Set streaming devices and consoles to output 4K so the TV does not have to upscale lower-resolution signals.
  • Turn on automatic brightness control (sometimes called Eco Sensor, Ambient Light Detection or Adaptive Brightness). It is not enabled out of the box on this model, so you need to switch it on in the picture or energy-saving menu.

Smart features and voice control

  • Control the TV from the manufacturer's smartphone remote app once both are on the same network.
  • Link the TV to a compatible smart speaker to switch it on, change inputs or adjust volume by voice.
  • Wake-on-cast lets a phone or tablet turn the TV on when you cast a video to it. It keeps the network connection alive in standby, which uses slightly more standby power.

Standby and power-saving options

Measured standby power is 0.9 W. Quick Start (also called Instant On) keeps more circuits powered so the picture appears faster; disable it if you want the lowest standby consumption. Use the sleep timer or the "auto power off when no signal" setting so the TV does not run for hours after everyone has left the room.

Preventing image retention on OLED

  • Vary what you watch: hours of the same channel logo, news ticker or game HUD at high brightness can leave a faint ghost image.
  • Leave the panel's built-in protection features (pixel shift, logo luminance adjustment, screen saver) enabled.
  • Turn the TV off with the remote rather than at the wall so the panel can run its automatic compensation cycle in standby after viewing.

Features

The ENERGY STAR record lists the following features for the Samsung QN65S90FAF:

Automatic brightness control
A light sensor adjusts screen brightness to the room. ENERGY STAR measures power at several room-light levels when this feature is present.
Motion-based dynamic dimming
Lowers brightness slightly in fast-moving scenes where the eye is less sensitive to it, trimming power use.
Adjustable backlight
Lets you set light output independently of contrast and black level — the most effective energy control on the TV.
Quick Start
Faster power-on in exchange for higher standby draw. Optional.
Wake-on-cast
Turns the TV on when content is cast from a phone or tablet on the same network.
App control
Smartphone remote control over your home network.
Smart-speaker control
Voice commands from a linked smart speaker.
Upconversion
Scales lower-resolution sources to the panel's native resolution.

Care and maintenance

WhenWhat to do
Every weekDust the screen and frame with a dry, clean microfiber cloth. Wipe gently in one direction; do not press on the panel.
When smudgedTurn the TV off and let it cool. Lightly dampen (do not soak) a microfiber cloth with water and wipe; never spray liquid directly on the screen or use ammonia, alcohol or window cleaners.
Every 3 monthsVacuum or brush dust from the ventilation slots on the back and check that cables are seated and not under strain.
Every few monthsCheck for and install software updates, and restart the TV fully (unplug for 60 seconds) if apps become sluggish.
OccasionallyIf faint retention appears, run the manual pixel-refresh or panel-care routine from the settings menu (it can take an hour; leave the TV plugged in).
Before moving the TVRemove the stand or mount, and transport the TV upright in its original carton if possible.

Troubleshooting

Many TV problems are caused by a source device, cable or setting rather than the television itself. Try these checks first; for model-specific messages and error codes, consult the manufacturer's manual or support site.

ProblemPossible causeWhat to try
No power, standby light offLoose power cord; tripped surge protector or outlet; internal power supply fault.Reseat the cord at both ends, try a different outlet, and reset the surge protector. If there is still no standby light, contact service.
Power light on but no pictureWrong input selected; source device off; faulty HDMI cable.Press Input/Source and select the correct port; power-cycle the source; try another HDMI cable or port.
Black screen, flicker or "no signal" with a 4K sourceCable not rated for the bandwidth; HDCP handshake failure; enhanced HDMI format disabled.Use a certified Premium/Ultra High Speed cable, enable the enhanced or deep-color HDMI setting for that port, and power-cycle the TV and source in that order.
Picture too darkEnergy-saving or automatic brightness feature active; low backlight setting.Raise the backlight (OLED light) setting or reduce the energy-saving level. Note that this increases power use.
Remote does not respondWeak batteries; obstruction in front of the sensor; Bluetooth remote unpaired.Replace the batteries, clear the line of sight, and re-pair the remote following the manual's pairing procedure.
Sound out of sync with pictureProcessing delay in a soundbar, receiver or wireless headphones.Adjust the audio-delay (AV sync) setting on the TV or sound system; use eARC/ARC where available.
Apps slow or will not loadWeak Wi-Fi; outdated software; full app cache.Try a wired Ethernet connection, install updates, and restart the TV by unplugging it for a minute.
Faint ghost image on screenTemporary image retention from static content.Watch varied full-screen content for a while, or run the panel-refresh routine. Persistent marks need service evaluation.
Bluetooth device will not connectDevice still paired to another source; out of range.Unpair it from the phone or computer, put it in pairing mode, and keep it within about 30 ft (10 m) of the TV.

Energy use and running costs

The Samsung QN65S90FAF is rated at 246 kWh per year. The DOE figure assumes about 5 hours of viewing per day with the TV in standby the remaining 19 hours. At an average electricity price of $0.17 per kWh, that comes to roughly $41.89 per year, or $3.49 per month.

Estimated from 132 W on-mode power and 0.9 W standby at $0.17/kWh.
Daily viewingEnergy per yearCost per year
3 hours151 kWh$25.67
